During the winter months our skin is exposed to a less humid environment and cold temperatures. Outdoor activities can also exposure skin to wind as well as cold. These factors can lead to dry and cracked skin making it more prone to itch, discomfort and rash. Below are some great tips for keeping your skin in great condition despite the elements:

  • Avoid very hot showers.
  • Use gentle cleanser only in essential areas and avoid on arms, legs.
    • Try CeraVe cleanser, Cetaphil Restoraderm or Avene Trixera+ body wash.
  • Moisturize your skin with a thick cream immediately following a bath or shower.
    • Barrier repair creams contain ceramides as well as natural lipids that replenish the upper layer of skin and help your skin hydrate naturally from within.
      • Try our Charlotte Skin & Laser Barrier Repair cream this month at 20% off!
      • Other examples include CeraVe cream or lotion, Avene Trixera+ cream or balm, and Cetaphil Restoraderm lotion. You will need to use a barrier repair cream for 7 – 14 days to see a significant difference over regular moisturizer but then the increase in skin hydration is significant.
    • Occlusive moisturizers work by sealing in moisture in the skin. They are very thick and soothing to dry skin and are best applied to damp skin. Elta crème in the big red tub is a favorite among staff and patients.
  • Drinking water will not hydrate your skin – this must be done with an applied moisturizer.
  • For really dry skin, moisturize more frequently than once a day. Avene Cold Cream body lotion is soothing at nighttime.
  • Hands really require moisturizer many times a day and after hand washing. CeraVe cream in a small 2 gm tube is ideal to carry or keep at your desk. Another favorite is our private label hand cream.
  • For cracked skin, apply Elta moisturizer, Aquaphor or petrolatum or vaseline.
  • Before outdoor activities, apply a barrier cream such as CeraVe, Elta or Avene Cicalfate. Afterwards, use Skin Ceuticals Hydrabalm to relieve irritated skin.
  • Put a humidifier in your bedroom.

Keeping your skin well hydrated in the winter can keep it healthy, soft and itch free!
