A Glass of Red Wine a Day to Keep the Doctor Away?

Well maybe not, but many studies have shown the health and skin benefits of drinking wine – red wine in particular. I am thinking of this subject as I unload cases of wine from a recent trip to Napa and Sonoma, California. My husband and I really enjoy wine and collecting wine. We look forward to opening one of the nice Pinot Noirs we purchased from Sonoma’s Russian River Valley or one of the delicious Rutherford area Cabernets. When we do, we will swirl and smell (yes smell not just sniff!) and taste and remember our visit to the vineyard and what the day was like and how pretty the scenery was- and I will remember the winery dog! The aroma and taste of wine can be very enjoyable and memory provoking. And a nice glass of wine to complement your dinner or wrap up your day can be very relaxing as well. Thank goodness there are health and skin benefits!

Red wine is an antioxidant and cholesterol lowering:

Red wine in particular is rich in antioxidants especially polyphenols including resveratrol. Antioxidants bind up tissue damaging free radicals and protect the body’s organs, including skin, from damage. This antioxidant effect can have skin benefits by protecting your skin from the damaging effects of sun exposure. Additionally red wine can lower triglycerides (bad fat in bloodstream) and raise levels of the good cholesterol HDL. Resveratrol is in white wine at markedly lower concentrations because the skin of the grape is removed prior to fermentation. Red wine is fermented with the skin thus giving the wine its vibrant red color and lots of resveratrol.

Wine can help maintain weight??

Yes – in moderation. Wine has also been shown in rats as well as humans to help with weight maintenance. A 13 year study of 19,000 women showed that those who consumed a light to moderate amount of alcohol gained less weight over the study period and were less likely to become overweight or obese.

Resveratrol in skin care products:

Resveratrol is just starting to be incorporated into skin care products. One new product at Charlotte Skin & Laser is the Power of Three Cream which contains 3 powerful antioxidants – green tea, caffeine (which also constricts blood vessels so is great for rosacea) and resveratrol. This product is a great anti-aging, anti-oxidant product particularly for skin that is prone to redness and flushing.

So enjoy that glass of red wine for health and relaxation and toast its anti-aging qualities!
