“I popped a pimple and now it looks horrible, like I’ve grown a third eye on my forehead.”
Picking at a blemish is the worst thing that you can do. Not only have you spread the bacteria, but you have slowed the healing process and increased your chances of scarring. Next time, control yourself for Heaven’s sake, and spot treat using Charlotte Skin & Laser Acne Gel or 5% Benzoyl Peroxide Treatment the moment you see that sucker appear. Or you can come see us for a cyst injection for faster resolution. In the meantime, dab on some Avene Cicalfate so that nasty scab that you inflicted heals.
“I spent the whole day at my kid’s soccer game in the blazing sun and now I look like a tomato.”
Tisk, tisk, not only are you risking developing skin cancer, you’re going to look like a dried up prune. Your skin is in a state of trauma and you need to pile on a penetrating moisturizer, one that will penetrate deep into the skin cell layers. Your best bet is Elta MD Intense Moisturizer. It’s a unique cream that melts quickly and spreads easily, relieving irritation, redness, and the flaking that you’re bound to experience after foolishly neglecting to wear proper SPF. Enjoy the outdoors, but smartly. I suggest using sunscreens containing physical blocks (Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide). My favorite for the face is Elta MD 41 because it’s tinted so it hides blotchiness and makes your skin look fantastic. Plus you’re protected against harmful UVA/UVB rays with 9% micronized zinc oxide and 7% titanium dioxide. Elta Lotion SPF 30 is great for arms and legs as an everyday moisturizer with the added benefit of sunscreen. And invest in a floppy sunhat because they’re fashionable and smart. The bigger and floppier, the better. Plus your kid won’t be able to tell whether you’re watching his game or not.
“I went gang-busters on my Retin-A and my face is raw and peeling off! EEK!”
Topical Retinoids are fantastic because they are proven to stimulate production of collagen and elastin, regulate cell turnover, and reduce the appearance of wrinkles as well as prevent new ones from forming. They can also shrink oil glands and decrease oil production – helpful for oily skin coupled with acne. Retinoids can be very irritating and drying to the skin if not gradually introduced. Your skin needs time to heal and repair itself. The quickest way to eliminate dryness and redness is to use products containing Hylauronic Acid, AKA the “diaper for the face”. It naturally occurs in soft tissue and in muscle and it’s purpose is to hold water in skin cells. Unfortunately natural production of Hylauronic Acid diminishes as we age so it’s best to apply it topically as part of your daily skin care routine. A few drops of SkinCeuticals B5 Gel is great under your moisturizer or used alone if your skin is oily or acneic. Your skin also needs a replenishing moisturizer that contains ceramides to help restore and maintain your skin’s natural barrier function. CeraVe Cream or Lotion is and inexpensive. When your skin has recovered and you look less like a lizard, begin using your Retin-A every 3rd night for 2 weeks and then every 2nd night for 1-2 weeks. When tolerable, work up to nightly use.
